MILWAUKEE - The FBI has announced that it will be holding an investigation into the death of Derek Williams in Milwaukee Police custody.

Special Agent Teresa Carlson and U.S. Attorney James Santelle were set to divulge more details at a news conference Wednesday.

Williams died while in Milwaukee Police custody in 2011.

Milwaukee's chief judge previously appointed a special prosecutor for the Milwaukee County District Attorney's investigation into Williams' death.

Video released in September shows Williams, who was under arrest for robbery, in the back of a squad car, pleading for officers to help him, saying he couldn't breathe.

Justice for Derek Williams

This is Derek Williams.
He died in the back of a Milwaukee Police Department squad car in July 2011 after repeatedly telling Milwaukee Police Officers that he could not breathe.

Following an investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Gina Barton, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner is changing the cause of death of Williams from "natural" to "homicide."

Barton was able to obtain reports and the police car video that shows Williams dying in the back of the squad.

Now the Milwaukee County District Attorney is opening up an investigation and the U.S Attorney's office is considering their own investigation. As a matter of fact, ten Milwaukee Alderman are formally asking for that federal investigation.
